 Ngayong nagdiriwang tayo ng Buwan ng Wika mahalaga na balikan natin ang wikang ginagamit ng mga Tayabasin. Si Dr, E. Arsenio Manuel ng UP ang unang nagsaliksik ng Tayabas Tagalog na nalathala noong 1971. Sadyang natatangi ang mga salitang ginagamit sa Tayabas. Malaki ang ambag ng kapaligiran- bundok, gubat, ilog, sapa, at mga halaman sa pagsibol ng wika, aniya. Basahin ang kwento kung paaano ginagamit ng mga Tayabasin ang mga salita na dito lang naririnig.

A SHORT NOTE ON THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF DR. HILARION TALAVERA SALVAÑA by Mariel O. Mabuting - CPDO Staff/OST-THG Secretary 

Dr. Hilarion “Lolon” T. Salvaña is the lyricist of Tayabas City official hymn entitled “Tayabas, Lungsod Naming Mahal”. He is 80 years old and was born on October 21, 1939. He currently lives in Tayabas City. Dr. Salvaña’s father was a musician and guide in his musical journey. In his early age he became a choir member. He studied in Luzonian Colleges (now Manuel S. Enverga Universiy Foundation) in Lucena for his secondary education, took BSE in Mathematics in the same school, and finished his Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics and Doctor of Education at UP Diliman and Enverga University, respectively.

In the 1970s, Hilarion T. Salvaña became the Head of Mathematics Department of Luis Palad Provincial High School and later promoted to Assistant Principal. In 1984, he became the Planning Officer of the then DECS Division of Quezon, was promoted to Education Supervisior for Research and Evaluation, passed the Superintendent Examination, was promoted to Assistant Superintendent, and served in this capacity in Oriental Mindoro and later in DECS Division of Quezon where he retired in 1999. After retirement in government service he served as professor in College and Graduate School of Enverga University where he stopped teaching in 2010. Because of his perseverance and contribution to the field of education, he received awards such as Quezon Medalya ng Karangalan in 2014, Most Distinguished Alumnus of Enverga University in 1994, and Teacher of the Year Award in the early 1970’s.

According to him, “Mathematics and music are related through note duration measurement”. Along his journey being an educator, music is always with him. He wrote various articles, songs and poems and short stories in Pilipino. He was co-author of a textbook in Mathematics, published a book entitled “Mga Kuwento at Tula ni Lolon” and had it printed in more than a thousand copies which is still on sale at the Luis Palad Educational Foundation, all the proceeds of which was donated to the Foundation for its projects for the school and for students from poor families. He wrote other unpublished books, namely, “Mumunting Mensahe Mula sa Isang Layko”, “Mga Likhang Himig ni Lolon”, “Munting Aklat ng mga Lumang Awit” and a revised edition of “Mga Kuwento at Tula ni Lolon”. These books contain most of his literary works and musical compositions such as Landas, Oyayi, Bayani sa Bagong Panahon, Awit ng Salamin, Guro ay Dakila, Multiplication Song, Awit ng Paladian and Awit ng Pagtatapos, among others.  

In 2007, he wrote the song “Lungsod ng Tayabas” upon request of then Mayor Dr. Severina C. Nadres to have an official hymn because Tayabas was then newly converted to city. But years after that, Tayabas cityhood status was challenged by the Supreme Court. The composition had to wait sometime before the Cityhood of Tayabas was reinstated in the year 2011. Then, he asked for the help of former Councilor Lovely Reynoso in sponsoring a Sangguniang Panglungsod Resolution for the legislation of the hymn.

Through Dr. Salvaña’s ardent desire to have an official hymn for Tayabas City, he turned to the song “O Bayan Ko” which was composed by his father, Mr. Gregorio Salvaña, and with the lyrics written by him, which was entered into the contest for the search of a song to be the official hymn of the celebration of the 400 years of Tayabas in 1978. The song won the first place as judged by Mrs. Belen V. Obispo, Mr. Rustico Babat and Fr. Conrado Reynoso. When Tayabas regained its cityhood status, Dr. Salvaña made some revision on the lyrics and changed the title of the song “O Bayan Ko” to “Tayabas, Lungsod Naming Mahal”. This recent version of the song is more fitting and more appropriate. It was presented to the members of Sangguniang Panglungsod presided by then Vice Mayor Brando Rea in 2012.

Mayor Ernida Agpi Reynoso won the candidacy on 2016. Dr. Salvaña received the news from then Councilor Geronimo “Onie” Tabernilla that the proposal for the official hymn of Tayabas was heard once again in the Sangguniang Panglungsod regular session. They planned to pick a choirmaster who will make arrangement for the recording of the song and subsequent production of CD. They chose Mr. Lamberto B. Galleno who later approached Dr. Salvaña to discuss the arrangement of the song and made some adjustment for choral rendition.

In 2017, the disc with the recorded hymn was delivered to Dr. Salvaña. The final version of the hymn was first heard on the State of the City Address of Mayor Ernida Agpi Reynoso on July 14, 2017.

For all the Tayabasin to learn the song by heart as their solemn tribute to the City of Tayabas and its people is Dr. Hilarion T. Salvaña’s dream.

HERITAGE CHURCHES IN TAYABAS CITY

Tayabas City is not only home of the Spanish Colonial Bridges, it is also home of centuries-old stone churches, namely, the Minor Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel, the largest Catholic church in the entire province; Nuestra Señora de Angustias or commonly known as Ermita Church, built in 1838; the Sanctuario de las Almas built in 1855, a former cemetery and now a place for devotees of San Diego de Alcala; and Camposanto de los Indios, a cemetery built in 1887.

The cemetery was built in 1889 by father Samuel Muena and today it is called “kamposanto.” The cemetery has a gate composed of two stone column that carry a grill sign and the grilss have two design.The cemetery was closed when the barrio of Cota (now Lucena) became a town.

Birhen Dolorosa Church or also known as Ermita church. It is located in Tayabas City, Quezon and it is near the Basilica Minor of Saint Michael Archanghel church. Based on our research, there are two Ermita Churches in Tayabas, the two Ermita chapels are dedicated to Nuestar Senyora de las Angustias and to San Diego de Alcala. This Ermita church is also a Historical Church in Tayabas.

Like most churches in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era, the first church of Tayabas was a camarin-type church built using bamboo, nipa and anahaw betweeen 1580 and 1585 under the supervision of Franciscan friars.

The church was repaired under the supervision of Saint Pedro Bautista in 1590. In the same year the Catholic church obtains permission from the superior government to build the church using stone. Upon the order of Saint Pedro Bautista leader of the Franciscans, the church was rebuilt in 1600 using bricks but later on the church destroyed by the 1743 earthquake but the walls were left standing. Due to the growing number of Catholics in Tayabas, the church was again rebuilt and extended. It was further expanded under the term of Father Benito de la Pila between 1856 and 1866 with addition of the transept in the shape of routunda and copula. The brick tile roof was replaced with galvanized iron sheets in 1894. Tayabas Basilica is considered to be one of the beautiful church in the Philippines. Through Presidential Decree no. 374, the National Museum of the Philippines declared Tayabas Basilica as a National Cultural Treasure on July 31, 2001, along with 25 other churches in the Philippines.

Minor Basilica of Saint Michael Archangel is one of the biggest and most beautiful churches in the province of Quezon. The local people in Tayabas called it the “Susi ng Tayabas“ for its key shaped architecture, and of course for the Church clock that is found on the belfry. 

Sanctuario Delas Almas built in 1855, the church was called “Cementerio de los Españoles” during the Spanish period. A former cemetery and now a place for devotees of San Diego de Alcala.

Some of the research, this church was built by the Spaniards in the 18th century as a cemetery chapel. It is one of the many chapels built by Spaniards in the outskirts of bayan during the 17th and 18th century.More therefore that many Spaniards and Filipino were buried here. San Jose is currently the patron saint of Sanctuario de las Almas (Chapel of Soul). November 01-02 many people went here to visit the lost family and going this church for the mass for the soul of their love ones.

Sa araw ng Sabado, ika-31 ng Hulyo ng kasalukuyan. Bumisita ang grupo ng OST- Tayabas Heritage Group kaisa ang ilang kasapi ng Tayabas Rescue Response Team Inc. sa mga tulay na nasasakupan ng Tayabas- Sariya way, sa kadahilanang biglaang pag papalawak ng daan para sa mga motorista. 

 

Una sa lahat ay ang Tulay ng Gibanga, pumangalawa ang Puente de Don Fransisco de Asis, sumunod ang mga Puenticito de Piit Grande, Puentecito de Piit Pequeño na nasasakupan ng Baranggay Anos. Pati na rin ang Puentecito de Toong, Puentecito de Potol-Chico, Puentecito de Potol-Estrecho, Puentecito de Potol-Grande sa Baranggay Potol. Matapos ang tanghalian ay kagyat na sunod na pinuntahan ang Puente de Isabel II sa bahagi ng Baranggay Maloa-a. Ang Puentecito de Nangca at Puentecito de Baawin sa Baranggay Baguio at ipinang huli ang Puente de Bai na nasasakupan ng Baranggay Dapdap. Sa pag-gunita ng aktibidad na ito ay napag alaman na ang ilan sa pinaka-iingatang makasaysayang mga tulay na naiwan at ipinamana ng ating mga ninuno ay nasa bingit nang pagkasira dahil nga sa ito ay dadaanan ng kasalukuyang road widening project ng DPWH. 

Sa abot ng aming makakaya ay papanatilihin at hindi hahayaang maapektuhan ang ilan sa ating pamana. Patuloy kaming mangangalaga sa mga ito upang manatiling buhay at nagbibigay kasaysayan sa mga tao at sa Lungsod ng Tayabas. Nawa'y sa susunod na pag sasagawa ng ganitong uri ng aktibidad ay kaisa na namin kayo,  Maraming Salamat po!
